After the revolution: Identity documents in the age of the cloud and social media

ePassports: New opportunities and advances
ePassports: New horizons
Since the introduction of ePassports in 2006 and subsequent associated secure documents like residence permits, there has been only one major change, with the introduction of EAC functionality. In the next few years, several advances in technology and ICAO requirement specifications will bring new challenges and new opportunities for Secure Document issuers. This presentation will consider the forthcoming new electronic functions and their implications including:
- New generations of high performance chips with higher capacity flash memories on data handling including the potential for “match-on-card” of both fingerprints and facial images.
- The increasing demand for higher electronic security within Secure Documents.
- The plans for very high data rate options within ISO14443 offering the possibility of both faster production and gate transaction times.
- The impact of proposed ICAO LDS2.0 on producers and issuers.

Creating a balance between ID document security and cost control
- Like all decisions, the choices made in the design of a secure identity document involve trade-offs, often between security and cost (of the document, of processing, etc.);
- Decisions made on these trade-offs need to be balanced and informed decisions; if not counterfeiters can gain an advantage, and security can be placed at risk;
- In examining examples from the US drivers license market, we can learn about decisions that have been made and learn from them, so that better cost vs security decisions can be made in the future.
Marty Kenner, Global Technical Director for 3M Security Systems, USA

SEMINAR - The Holistic Passport: Document Design for a New Age
Most identity documents follow tried and tested design methods in the way they achieve security. This session will look at how it is now necessary, rather than just advisable, for security features to be integrated with one another in order to produce something that is more than simply a sum of the component parts.
Using recent high-end counterfeiting and forgery case studies, it will show the current level of reproduction that has been achieved by today's criminals in various disciplines. It will also look at the ways in which safeguard interdependency can assist the end user to more easily examine these sometimes complicated devices.
Finally, it will question whether the evolution of security documents has taken a natural path, or has it been artificially guided by the many regulations which now have to be considered?
Brian Somers, Specialist Identity Document Examiner, National Document Fraud Unit, UK
